The Main Street Children’s Choir (formerly Main Street Singers) is a children’s choir based in New Britain, CT. From September through April each year, we hold weekly rehearsals in preparation for our winter and spring performances and other special showcases. As an after school enrichment opportunity, our mission as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization is to provide the opportunity for children in greater New Britain to sing in choirs that build community, strive for artistic excellence, and foster a lifelong love of music. Membership in the chorus emphasizes the development of healthy vocal technique, music literacy, and musicianship skills that are cultivated through practice and performance of excellent treble children’s choral repertoire. The chorus performs at various locations throughout Connecticut and the New Britain community.
MSCC serves children grades preschool through eighth grade. We have three rooms where learning takes place. Main Street Music Time, for grades PK to 1 with parent present, uses a First Steps in Music Curriculum which features songs, games and movement. Our Junior Room is for grade 2 where we continue to work on general music skills and begin to incorporate singing as a choir with a conductor. These children perform as a separate group and with the Senior Choir two times a year. Our Senior Choir is for grades 3-8, where students concentrate on preparing a formal choir performance. MSCC uses an American Kodály method and the Feierabend Conversational Solfege Pedagogy.
2001: The Beginning
Main Street Children’s Choir (then ‘Main Street Singers’) began with conversations in 2001 with local educational administrators and teachers as well as the pastors, members, and leaders of South Church, New Britain, Connecticut, about a community children’s choir to reach out to the diverse population of children in the greater New Britain area.
2004: First Concert
With start-up support from the church, MSCC (grades five through eight) began rehearsals in January, 2004, and on May 1, 2004, they gave their first concert.
The next decade
In the eleven years since MSCC gave its first concert, the choir has performed for many local, regional, and national events. Locally, there are two performances yearly at SouthChurch, along with performances at a New Britain Rock Cats baseball game, and an annual tour of schools. They have been invited six times to perform at the renowned New Britain Museum of American Art. MSCC has been the featured choir at conferences of the American Choral Directors Association, the Organization of American Kodály Educators, Eastern Region Conference of the Music Educators National Conference, and the Connecticut Music Educators Association. They have performed with the professional ensemble CONCORA, the Bristol Choral Society, and twice with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra.
The Main Street Children’s Choir will continue our devotion to community music education, but not without your help! Register today to sign your child up for MSCC or keep exploring to find out ways you can help support MSCC and get involved!
